Solders

11 June 2014 - Further Update - in addition to the issues mentioned below, we have now had deliveries recently and the prices have gone through the roof. It has therefore been necessary to increase the costs of all reels to reflect these changes. As an example, we are now paying considerbaly more for each reel than the price that we have been selling them for. Clearly that can not continue hence the price increases.

PLEASE NOTE - DIFFICULTIES RE SUPPLY & PRICE

With industry hardly using solder wire anymore, it gets more and more difficult to obtain supplies in wire form. It is now almost a case of buying what we can get hold of, rather than ordering specific solders that we would like to buy.

Please bear in mind that there are likely to be changes within our range of solders as we can only sell what we can track down to buy! In may cases this ends up being an 'end of run' from another purchaser and so the amounts available vary greatly from week to week, resulting in a difficult position for us in that we never know if we will be able to purchase some now or in the future. It's a case of pot luck as to what is available at the time.

Further more because wire solder is not generally made, its price goes up and up to those that do still want it. It is likely therefore that prices will have to rise in the near future.

Solder & Fluxes

Soldering is not difficult. Anyone CAN do it. They just need to have the right tools and products and follow some simple rules.

What we offer is designed to help the modeller achieve a strong and neat soldered joint, whatever metals it is they are soldering.

This is achieved by offering:

  1. A range of products that help to ensure that the metals to be joined are perfectly clean and do not contain impurities that could prevent the perfect joint from being made (probably the biggest reason why joints fail)

  2. A selection of Solders and Fluxes that have been specially designed over many years to compliment the metals that are being joined (see table below)

  3. A range of soldering irons and bits suitable for any job likely to be
encountered by the railway modeller (by suitable we mean powerful enough – probably the 2nd biggest reasons why joints fail)

  4. A selection of products that ensure that both the joint and the tools used to make it are left free of contaminates which would otherwise cause problems later on if not dealt with

  5. Detailed guidance in our Soldering ‘Data Sheet ‘(see top menu) to help both beginners and more experience modellers ensure that they get it right each and every time they solder a joint

It’s only a guide – not a bible!

Whilst the below table gives some general guidance as to which solder and flux is should be used with which metals, it must be understood that this is only a recommendation for guidance. Trial and error is the best way to find what suits you, as many metals do vary within their class, and this effects how they react to various solders and fluxes. It really comes down to experimenting and finding what works best for you. There are customers who have used Green Flux to solder everything over a long period and get on with it, even though the table below suggests that there are other fluxes that might give better results.
