Paints, Oils, Greases and other Chemicals

Oils and Grease

The Oil and Grease are quite simply the best available on the market. (If price is a guide, the Grease - which is an 'extreme pressure apply and forget' compound, is over 25 times as expensive as normal vehicle grease...).

Cleaners and Cleaning Chemicals

The Cleaner/Degreaser and Aerosol are both based upon IPA. They are perfect for cleaning and degreasing. We find the aerosol to be especially good for cleaning dirty locomotive chassis. Handling them and tweaking with a cotton bud, etc. always seems to push the brake hangers and pickups out of alignment. So instead, remove the body, sit the chassis on some kitchen towel. Spray, (be careful not to spray into the motor), leave overnight and next day you should have a pristine chassis, ready for the merest lick of oil at the moving parts.

Please, please take care when using solvents. Keep the area well ventilated, keep it away from sources of ignition, do not smoke, and do not breathe the vapour.

Solvents

C+L supply Butanone, also known as Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK). MEK is highly inflammable and can be irritating to the eyes and respiratory system. Repeated exposure may cause skin dryness or cracking and the vapours can cause drowsiness and dizziness. MEK is effective in 'welding' ABS to itself, plywood and polystyrene. Normal application is by brush, but if you want to deposit a measured quantity, with minimum 'creep' to adjacent work, why not use a lining pen? Not the modern sophisticated types, but the tradition 'bow' pen - the dual nib type, with the knurled nut adjustment. Practice - you will soon be able to, for example, glue windows, without getting solvent on the face of the material.

As well as Butanone, we also sell our branded 'Plastic Weld'. This covers a much wider range of plastics than Butanone. However, we still recommend that you regard Butanone as your first solvent and it should always be used on our chairs and sleepers. As with the use of all solvents, care should be taken with Plastic Weld. It is Methylene Chloride - widely used in the plastics and Perspex industries. However the vapour is harmful and it is a Category 3 carcinogen. Treat it with the respect it deserves!

It is important to understand there is no such thing as a safe solvent. All have drawbacks. Some are irritants, others are classed as carcinogens. Many are highly inflammable. All should be handled with care. In particular, always provide adequate ventilation and never smoke whilst using them.

We will happily supply a copy of the relevant Safety Data Sheet for our solvents and fluxes. Please ask for a copy and read it - your life could depend on understanding what to do in case of an emergency.

Paints

NEW! Teroson Etch Primer Aerosol. C1610.

We all know how hard it is to get paint to adhere to brass. Well, this really works. It provides good adhesion on brass and nickel silver and is equally at home on plastics. It dries quickly to a hard matt surface, which can be over coated with enamels, acrylics and cellulose. It is also especially effective on steel and aluminium. A 500ml aerosol can will last for ages. We use it here and think it is the best etch primer we have used.
