Cork is a widely used track underlay. When sliced with a chamfer, it is fast to lay, has an accurate profile and preserves your setting out. It may be curved to suit the sharpest likely bend, without further cutting. It is laid on one side of the marked out centre line, so that when the second strip is laid against it, the joint shows the centre for accurate track laying.
For double track, a third strip is laid with its chamfered edge lapping that of the first track, this gives correct minimum spacing of 46mm for 4mm scale running lines. A fourth strip is added to complete the ballast. Pointwork is easily done by laying the outer strips first, then lapping and slitting the inner ones to fit between them.
Never pin your track down; for this will cause the sleepers to bend inwards and so alter the gauge. A light smear of Evo-Stik, about every 3-4 sleepers is usually all that is required. Weights may be used, if necessary to hold the track in position. To assist modellers in laying areas of pointwork and sidings, we supply cork sheets, 12in by 36in size. The sliced cork strips should be laid on either side of the area, which may then be filled in with the sheet.
Many modellers prefer to use a foam underlay. This is supplied in 1 metre x ½ metre rolls and rather than following the contours of your track layout, can be glued over the whole baseboard area. Carpet underlay adhesive in an aerosol form is ideal. Any areas were you need to get to the baseboard can be easily cut out with a sharp knife.
Please note: Cork is a natural product and thicknesses do vary from batch to batch. Also the 1/16th" material is still measured in imperial measurements for length and width, but is now a nominal 1.4mm thick. Therefore if thickness is critical, it is sensible to order as much as you are going to need in one order.
C1191 - Baseboard Joiners, C1190 - Tee nuts & Bolts
These are the cast iron 1” round dowel type fixings that have become the standard for exhibition layouts. Unlike brass dowels, once fixed they do not move within the wood and provide accurate alignment of the baseboards.
Whilst the Baseboard Joiners hold the boards in perfect alignment, you will still need nuts and bolts to hold the board together. One of the ‘hazards’ of fixing baseboards together is that dropping a nut or washer invariably means having to crawl back out to get to where they have rolled. Pronged tee nuts and bolts overcome this problem. The prongs around the nut bite into the wood and stay there. Smear a little Evo-Stik onto the washer - the side that lies against the wood, and tighten up. From then on, you only have the bolt to deal with.
